‘I Didn’t Believe feat. Elizabeth Rose (Extended Version)’ by Flight Facilities

Alongside the irrepressibly cool LA duo Classixx, Sydney’s Flight Facilities have pretty much refined the appropriational balance inherent to all nu-disco: the very word implies revision, reconstitution, or amendment, and both acts seem to have opted for a satisfyingly even-handed approach to old and new sensibilities.

“All You’re Waiting For” and now “I Didn’t Believe” both forgo rhythmic and tuneful complication for precise pop comfort, and they mirror each other’s penchant for female-led hooks that stay simple and memorable. The new video for this Elizabeth Rose co-production also cops vibes and dance cues from vintage Soul Train clips, while the jangly guitar work is certainly riding the crest of a wave that Nile Rodgers’ reintroduction to the charts all but cemented. Especially in “I Didn’t Believe“‘s case, it’s simply old technique dressed up in modern frequencies. Rose on the other hand, singing with the wonderstruck wistfulness of her youth, breathlessly embodies the possibilities.

‘Only You Can Show Me (ft Mereki)’ by Goldroom

Okay, so no leisurely yoga poses here, but still a fun carousel of awkward, everyman dancing and colourful clothing that’s still a cut above your seasonal GAP swatches. So what’s in this Summer? Zesty limes and oranges, green kiwi and passion fruit pink, cool mint and maybe even a little ocean breeze blue. So fresh!

‘Only You Can Show Me (feat. Mereki Beach)’ by Goldroom

Further living up to the luminous warmth of his name, Goldroom brings yet another bright spark of Summery uplift to the dancefloor, channelling the sun-kissed splendour of his West Coast climes with all the leisurely repose of a yoga stretch. As with fellow LA natives Classixx, Goldroom seems most enamoured with the transportative sense of freedom and euphoria inherent to house music, and tracks like these are perfect examples of the allure: Piped through earbuds, car stereos or the blaring speakers of a hip club, “Only You Can Show Me” enables us to give our own Salutation to the Sun any which way we please, whether by communal dance party, oceanside drive or intensely personal bedroom rave. It simply travels.

‘Good Love (Instrumental)’ by Rome Jeffries

This early eighties obscurity from Rome Jeffries and producer Greg Henderson further supports my theory that the preeminent sign of good cocktail funk is when half the beat is made up of clinking Martini glasses. The 1983 release is something of a singularity, in that Jeffries never put out anything since, though from cursory searches around YouTube it looks to remain popular amongst fans of vintage funk.

‘Bruk It Dung (DCUP Remix)’ by Mr. Vegas

Oh man how have I lived so long without Mr. Vegas’ mesmeric, butt-twerking video for “Bruk It Dung” in my life. It’s a veritable dancehall anthem for ladies who like to push that Jamaican tush. This remix from Melbourne’s DCUP is fun too, for something that doesn’t have any butts in it anyway…

Pristine!

‘Melt (Zimmer Remix)’ by Kamp!

Congratulations Zimmer for already setting the bar so high for tropical disco in 2013. There is not one blemish to be found in this dusk-hued jewel of a jam, which was supposedly composed on an actual beach somewhere in Mexico this past Summer (Tulum, to be exact, but do NOT google images of that place unless you want to involuntarily throw yourself out the nearest window). It’s the aura of ’90s house music, refracted mirage-like over an indie-disco dancefloor, and the image you’re seeing is the place you’d rather be right now, dancing.

‘Been There Before (Shook Remix) by Ghost Beach

The prolific, franco-funk dominating wunderkind that is Shook saunters into the new year with the same impeccable cool that defined him in the last, remixing New York synth-pop duo Ghost Beach for a new remix EP that’ll see release in March. Here’s hoping for more inspired, Gloria Estefan-channelling Ronika collaborations in the near future, but really, anything he drops will be worth a spin or two (hundred).

‘Sunny Days (BRONX Remix)’ by Patterns

Maybe the last thing you need to hear right now is someone soothingly extol the pleasantries of Summers past while the frigid snap of cold air continues to encroach on all that is holy and righteous and true (fingers and toes/just-microwaved mini pizzas). Or maybe it’s exactly what you need to hear to combat the very same. Available on Amazon.

‘Summer Breezin’ (The Project Club Remix)’ by Three Balearos

Of course this sounds like a slow motion waterfall at sunset.

‘Sun (Gigamesh Remix)’ by Two Door Cinema Club

It’s that time of year again when Summer songs turn into exotic postcards from far off lands AND THERE’S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.

‘Last Time (Krystal Klear Remix)’ by Telephoned

Cribbing notes from the likes of Tiffany and Madonna, Manchester-based Krystal Klear transports Telephoned’s sassy Summer funk to a world of plastic ’80s mall pop, where deliciously chintzy slap bass is slathered like glitter glue over pristinely airbrushed hooks designed specifically for jean-jacketed tweens (me). Just one of many remixes on the Brooklyn duo’s new EP, available through iTunes.

‘C O O L’ by Le Youth

From the tanned shores of Los Angeles comes an irresistibly svelte sliver of tropical disco, which, echoing fellow dancefloor mixologist Perseus, comes flush with r’n’b-sourced vocals. C’est cool non?

‘Triscuits’ by Monitor 66

Swedish newcomers to House of Disco Records, Monitor 66 revel in the warm, nostalgic glow of balearic house and ’90s r’n’b for their Keith Sweat-sampling throwback.

‘Borderline (Butch le Butch 5am Garage Rework)’ by Madonna

One of the most enduring melodies from Madonna’s impeccable debut, retooled for dancefloor farewells as an uplifting, eleven-minute disco grace note.
