‘Quizassa’ by Roomful of Teeth
This is unreal! The creepily named Roomful of Teeth are an entirely non-traditional a capella group made up of eight classically trained vocalists who seem hell bent on harnessing the stunning breadth of the human voice. Trained in everything from Tuvan throat singing and yodelling to Sardinian and Inuit technique, their roster boasts some considerable aptitude, but within hearing the first few seconds of ‘Quizassa’, you won’t have trouble believing every word of it. Its incantatory tapestry of chest belting sounds and inner-throat reverberations forms a bracingly visceral listening experience that’s more akin to a mystical pagan summoning than a choir recital, and amidst the sheer vocal power on display, there are some truly hair raising moments.
They are on the cusp of releasing their debut album on October 30th, which was made with the help of a few guest composers, and it was, in fact, *twist ending* vocal boombox Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs who composed this particular track!
