“Stupid Things” by Yo La Tengo // Stupid Things EP (Out 10.2.12 via Matador)
Yo La Tengo has been working on a followup to 2009’s “Popular Songs” and now we have some evidence of said work. “Stupid Things” is a forthcoming 12” single that features album track, “Stupid Things”, only this version of the song will not make the final album, but a variation will take it’s place. Also available on the 12” is a longer instrumental, and a remix by EYE of the Boredoms. You can sample the entire EP on Spotify now. The title track is a suitably autumnal sound, with breezy guitars and a laid back floating beat that chugs along at a brisk pace. The lovely vocal melody is calls to mind something from their album “And Then Turned Itself Inside Out”, soft and dreamy with no immediate sense of urgency, but immediately memorable. Highest recommendation.
Yo La Tengo is Spanish for ‘comfort blanket’.
