‘Patchwork’ by Laurie Spiegel

The pioneering composer whose futuristic soundscapes created a whole new vision of electronic music throughout the 70s and 80s will be re-releasing her 1980 debut album The Expanding Universe via Unseen Worlds on September 25. Album opener ‘Patchwork’ gallops out the gate with its interloping sequences of dots and loops, which when superimposed on top of one another creates a complex circuitry of patterned syncopation. It’s a surprisingly organic and intricate listen, with a melodic fingerprint that is simply un-recreatable, and as such is a fascinating example of how early synth music had already managed to reject and transcend the technological world’s implicit machinised autonomy.
