‘Oh My Beautiful World’ by Lavender Diamond
Despite a very long run with The Decemberists and a few Starkian tidbits popping up here and there, I’ve been crying, pining, praying for the return of Becky Stark’s starring endeavour Lavender Diamond for years, and now it’s finally happening and now everything is beautiful and nothing hurts.
‘Oh My Beautiful World’ is taken from their follow up to 2007’s Imagine Our Love, tentatively titled Incorruptible Heart, which just about sums up the resilient mood she’s carried through the five year gap. Her soulful, textural howls are back, and so are the quasi-religious/quasi-hippie endorsements of love, positivity and togetherness, all set to a swaying, lullaby rhythm. Some psychedelic swirls come into play at a few opportune moments, as if to remind you that, like with Stark herself, there are still some eccentricities behind the artistry. But until I get to hear more, I can only say: It’s so good to have you back, Becky. The whole you.
