‘Gun Has No Trigger’ by Dirty Projectors

David Longstreth’s director’s statement points towards pervasive social media and what he calls an imagined “2012 Exodus from the Society of the Spectacle” as the main inspirations behind his new video, which mines the famous iconography of Facebook profile images and iPod adverts. But when it’s central visual schema of faceless shadows slowly ditching the veil of anonymity combines with Longstreth’s sometimes overtly topical lyrics (I don’t see how “but now the banks are closed and nothing gets bigger” can be anything other than a reference to the economic crisis), it’s hard not to read into this tragic tale of impotence in a time of power struggle more politically — like a cry from the 99%.
